AI VS AI - by Shirley Sokol
Let’s start down the path of looking deeper into the different aspects of artificial intelligence (AI) and authentic intelligence (AI), otherwise known as human intelligence. We’ll start by an overview of what a few organizations are releasing and then go deeper with future articles.
Artificial intelligence has been summarized as technology that will bring us efficiency, productivity, navigation, assist with repetitive patterns to create intuitive computers and language translations. It will use different methods with statistics, computations and symbols. I am thankful for certain AI features that make my life easier, for example, apparently, I was not born with an inner compass. It is essential that I use Google Maps on my phone or I would end up in the next state. I challenged myself to move from artificial to authentic intelligence by ensuring that I paid attention and learned the proper route…but it took a few times. The tricky part was, as the map app typically gives you the fastest route, it would change up on me and that really threw me off! The key was to operate the “old school” way and pay attention to where I was going and which freeway exits to take and make it to my destination.
It reminds me of when I used to remember phone numbers and then a day came when I thought …. why? Now I have data bases that instantly bring up the number I need and then I just push “call”. Honestly, I’m sure most of us appreciate that bit of technology and are grateful as it makes life more efficient. Since I have always been interested in future trending, I am concerned with the aspects of artificial intelligence in a few areas………or perhaps it is really what society around the world will do with it……. as there are applications for good and bad in most technologies.
The Pew Research Center published an article, 12/10/18 posting the results of a survey conducted last year to nearly 1000 professionals. They asked if in the year 2030, “As emerging algorithm-driven AI continues to spread, will people be better off than they are today?” In summary, on the bright side, the group felt that we would benefit from health care advances through diagnostics and towards the quality of life for seniors. The other area of hope that AI would benefit from according to the majority of the respondents was in the education system.
“We need to work aggressively to make sure technology matches our values.” Erik Brynjolfsson, Director of MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy
Overall, 63% of those surveyed, said they were hopeful and 37% said that people would not be better off.
Here were their top concerns for the future of artificial intelligence:
· Human Agency
Individuals are experiencing a loss of control over their lives.
· Data Abuse
Data use and surveillance in complex systems is designed for profit or for exercising power.
· Job Loss
The AI takeover of jobs will widen economic divides, leading to social upheaval.
· Dependence lock-in
Reduction of individuals cognitive, social and survival skills.
· Mayhem
Autonomous weapons, cybercrime and weaponized information.
Suggested Solutions:
· Global good is No.1
Improve human collaboration across borders and stakeholder groups.
· Values – based system
Develop policies to assure AI will be directed at “humanness” and common good.
· Prioritize people
Offer economic and political systems to better help humans “race with the robots”.
“At stake is nothing less than what sort of society we want to live in and how we experience our humanity.” Batya Friedmen, a human-computer interaction professor at the University of Washington’s Information School.
I have been studying Faith Popcorn, Futurist of Brainreserve, since the late 80’s. Future trends forecasted over 20 years ago have come true…I have seen it. She coined the term “cocooning” back in the day…it is now in the dictionary. If you are curious as to her highly successful methodology, please check out the Brainreserve site at www.faithpopcorn.com. Although she has published several books since that time, I am waiting for another one that falls in format with the first one I read, The Popcorn Report…..perhaps a “second edition”….I’ll continue to wait. In the meantime, check out her teams latest 17 trends currently being tracked.
I wondered what Ms. Popcorn’s position was regarding the future of artificial intelligence. In December 2016, The New York Times published an article entitled, “Artificial Intelligence May Usher in a New Golden Age”, featuring Faith Popcorn as she discusses how it is possible that thousands of us could be “robo-placed”. She also comments on the positive effects AI has on translation apps that will help conversations “flow around the globe” and how diagnostic advances were already saving lives as AI picked it up when medical authentic intelligence did not. She hinted at a possible “golden age” where we could live towards 150 years of age and free ourselves from the drudgery of work, which may elevate our society and “revel in a new Golden Age”.
Next, let’s look at an overview of what people are saying about the spiritual concerns regarding artificial intelligence. Questions out there include, will AI have a soul, is Siri on the waiting list, could it expand spirituality as a connector to the beyond, will we have more time to reach out and explore? The education organization Educaba, lists the advantages and/or differences of AI over human intelligence as:
Nature of Existence
Human intelligence revolves around adapting to the environment using a combination of several cognitive processes.
The field of Artificial intelligence focuses on designing machines that can mimic human behavior.
Memory usage
Humans use content memory and thinking whereas, robots are using the built-in instructions, designed by scientists.
Mode of creation
Human intelligence is bigger because its creation of God and artificial intelligence as the name suggests is artificial, little and temporary created by humans. Also, Human intelligence is the real creator of the artificial intelligence even though they cannot create a human being with superiority.
Learning process
Human intelligence is based on the variants they encounter in life and responses they get which may result in millions of functions overall in their lives. However, Artificial intelligence is defined or developed for specific tasks only and its applicability on other tasks may not be easily possible.
Dominance
Artificial intelligence can beat human intelligence in some specific areas such as in chess. A supercomputer has beaten the human player due to being able to store all the moves played by all humans so far and being able to think ahead 10 moves as compared to human players who can think 10 steps ahead but cannot store and retrieve that number of moves in chess.
Points to Note
The accelerating rate of technological change makes it likely that people will have both the computational capacity and scientific knowledge to create AGI in the next few decades.
Having AGI will be beneficial to humanity. For example, it may enable humans to mitigate global problems such as climate change.
It may also lead to an increase in the rate of economic growth and level of production.
Intelligent and super intelligent machines are the future of humanity.
As we move forward, we will review the different angles and points of view people around the world have on AI vs. AI……..a fascinating….yet disconcerting future trend. (SJV)
