Spiritual and Healing Art Through Creativity - by Meg McDonald

What do you think of when someone says “spiritual” art? My original thoughts would have turned to the religious icons and art of the medieval world. The icons often depicted saints, the Holy family, or the Buddha. These objects were often adorned with jewels and heavy gold frames, they were venerated, consecrated and worshiped by many.

Life on this earth has deepened my thoughts on this subject. After a lengthy struggle with an autoimmune illness, in which I lost my job, house, and the person who I thought was a life partner…I needed to heal my grief as well as my physical body and spirit. Balancing work, family, and creative time has always been a challenge.

How does one heal themselves on a budget of no income? Thankfully, friendship, love, my children, and pets were my safety net, they held the candle of hope when I could not. Healing became my goal and main interest in spiritual art. I believe that spiritual art is the creative act in music, visual arts, writing, fiber arts, and dance, that connects you with your own soul, and the Universe within and without.

This creativity is felt when you lose yourself the moment that you start your creative work. The biggest secret for me to heal was to remember the answer to the question; WHAT DO YOU LOVE?

I learned it doesn’t matter how prolific you are at your craft or how much you sell. It matters that you connect with your expansive spirit and listen to and work with that energy. We are made of stardust and love, what could be more magical than that? Whitney Freya, an intentional creativity artist and author of the book “Rise Above”, reminds us that we are the sole creators of our experience. “The treasure of intentional creativity is to become the most authentic, most fearless and free you. What you paint, is SIGNIFICANT, the image is alive with its own energy, it is a conversation with your highest self. It is only from the present moment that you can access your creator self. Anything is possible when you detach from your stories and limiting beliefs. You can tap into your intuition and infinite, knowing mind.”

Be gentle with that inner child, don’t judge yourself with every move, find what you love on this planet and dive in.
